Making Time for Self Care

Kelly richey healing artsSome of the most common reported barriers to practicing Self-Care are a lack of energy or time,  lack of financial ability or those feelings of selfishness or guilt that we talked about in the last article.

But Self-Care doesn’t need to be time-consuming, draining, or even expensive in order to be effective. Self-Care can be simple as showing yourself some love and kindness.

If you find that you lack the time or simply can’t remember to fit in your Self-Care practices during the day, it’s time to start scheduling them in! Seriously – grab a pen, make it permanent, and write it down. Make it a non-negotiable. If you don’t block off the time for yourself now, then you’ll end up filling it with something else later. It doesn’t have to be a whole afternoon or even an hour at a time – find 15-20 minutes in your day that you can dedicate to yourself and your Self-Care.

Turn your daily habits into Self-Care

You can also turn your daily habits into Self-Care if you so choose. For example, you can mindfully go through your skincare routine. Your skincare routine is something you do everyday anyway, why not make it something you enjoy doing? Take it slow. Deeply breathe in the natural scents of your products. Slowly and gently massage them into your skin. Mix up a special face mask. Lie down and focus on deep, rhythmic belly breathing. Turn what is a mundane daily ritual into a Self-Care Experience.

I might be met with some opposition on this one, but housework can be Self-Care, too. Get a load of laundry done, clean out the junk drawer in the kitchen or go through your closet and get rid of clothing you haven’t worn in years. Look over that to-do list of yours and commit to complete one of the things you’ve been putting off. These might not be the most “fun” ways to practice Self-Care, but chances are you’ll feel better when you’re finished.

The more you practice Self-Care, the easier it will come. You can fit self-care into your schedule, no matter how busy you are, by simply deciding that it’s a priority for you.

Making Self-Care a priority is just one of the topics we discuss in our program Self-Care Providers present, The Power of Self-Care Six-Part Series. This program, offered as an add-on to Lunch & Learns, is available as a half-day or full-day program, and can be tailored for team building or individual personal growth.
